Good attendance is essential to success in school. A student should attend school each day unless he/she is ill. There is a major distinction between ill and feeling poorly. Rule of thumb - Keep students home who have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, have diarrhea, or are vomiting.

Absence From School

Legally excused absences are defined by the Ohio Revised Code as absenses for personal illness, illness, or death in the family, quarantine, or religious holidays.

Pre-excused absences are defined as absences for approved causes (physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, dentists, and similar professional persons may request permission to have pupils excused during the school day. These absences will occur with the full knowledge and consent of the parents. The principal, at his/her discretion, may accept as valid the reason for these absences.

Upon returning to school after an absence, students must provide a written excuse from a parent/guardian within three days.

Students will be excused from school attendance when prevented from such attendance due to conditions rendering safety. Students whose absences are excused have the right and responsibility to make up the work. Those students who are absent due to unexcused reasons DO NOT have the opportunity to make up the work missed.

Half Day Absence:

Check in before 11:30 with a doctor's excuse = student is medically excused.

Check in before 11:30 without a doctor's excuse is tardy.

Check in at or after 11:30 = student is absent 1/2 day.

Check out before 11:30 = student is absent 1/2 day.

Classification of Absences:

Check out after 11:30 = student is absent 1/2 day.

Upon returning to school, the student's absence will be classified in one of the following categories:

Excused - Students in this catagory, withing a reasonable length of time, may make up all missed work.

Unexcused - Excessive absences in this area will result in a parent conference and possible disciplinary and/or legal action taken by the school.

Truant - Students who have been truant shall receive an "F" for all work missed and will be subject to disciplinary action.

Tardiness to School:

The school feels that it must create an awareness of the desirability and necessity of punctuality. All children reporting to school after 8:55 are considered tardy. Continued tardiness will result in a parent conference or possible home visit to correct this situation.

Excessive Absences:

The following steps will be taken in cases of excessive absence:

A phone call or written notice of the absence will be sent home.

A letter will be sent following the 5th absence notifying the parent of the irregular attendance. Another notice will be sent before the 10th absence, reminding parent of our attendance policy and referral to the juvenile court attendance officer.

Following the 10th absence, a letter will be sent to the parent describing the situation. A school attendance counselor may be sent to the home or a hearing will be conducted with the parent by the attendance officer.

Following the 15th absence, a letter will be sent to the parent describing the situation. If the child has been absent without legal excuses, the child will be referred to the court.

A student will be recommended for retention following the 30th absence.

Truancy

Truancy is defined as the absence of a student for other than a legitimately recognized reason, for all or part of a day when school is in session. Even when the absence occurs with parental knowledge and consent, the principal need not accept as valid the reason given for the absences.

Leaving School

The building principal shall not excuse a pupil before the end of the school day without a request for early dismissal by the student's parent/guardian. Telephone requests for early dismissal or a pupil shall be honored only if the caller can be positively identified as the pupil's parent/guardian.

Reasons for early dismissal from school will adhere to the state regulations on attendance.

Students must be signed out in the office. The parent must come personally to the office for the student and sign them out.

Students who know in advance that they will be leaving early will need to present a note to the office before classes begin for approval. The student then reports to the office to sign out and to be picked up by his/her parent/guardian.

Once a student has arrived on school property, he/she is not allowed to leave without parental supervision, parental agreement in writing, school supervision, school agreement and/or approved combination of these factors.

The consequences of leaving school property without approval and repeated violation of this procedure will be handled by the office and may result in truancy charges being filed.
